How to use the vat / sales tax calculator

Two directions, one tool

Add tax when you have a net (before-tax) price and need the invoice total. Remove tax when a receipt or till total already includes tax and you need the net figure for your books — the most common VAT question in bookkeeping.

Formulas. Adding tax: Tax = Net × rate ÷ 100, and Gross = Net + Tax. Removing tax: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and Tax = Gross − Net.

Your rate, your country

VAT and sales-tax rates differ by country and product, and they change over time. That is why this calculator asks you for the rate instead of assuming one — the quick-pick buttons are examples only. Check your local tax authority's current rate before filing.

Example

Net 100 at 20%: tax = 20, gross = 120. Working backwards, a gross price of 120 at 20% splits into net 100 and tax 20 — enter 120 in “Remove tax” mode to see it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 + (rate / 100). At 20%, divide by 1.20. A 120 gross price is 100 net plus 20 tax.

Why is the tax in a 120 price not 24 at 20%?

Because the 20% applies to the net price (100), not the gross. 20% of 120 would double-count the tax itself.

Does this work for US sales tax?

Yes. Sales tax uses the same maths: add it to a net price, or divide a tax-inclusive total by 1 + rate to back it out.
