How to use the invoice total calculator

The order matters

Invoice maths has a fixed order that accounting software follows: total the line items, take the discount off, then charge tax on what remains. Charging tax before the discount would overstate the tax — this calculator always works in the correct order and shows each step.

Formula. Subtotal = Σ (qty × unit price). Discount = Subtotal × discount%. Taxable = Subtotal − Discount. Tax = Taxable × tax%. Grand total = Taxable + Tax.

Printing

Use the print button for a clean summary of items and totals to attach to your own invoice template. Your headed paper and invoice numbering stay in your accounting system — this tool is for fast, correct totals.

Example

2 × 50 plus 1 × 30: subtotal 130. A 10% discount takes off 13, leaving 117 taxable. Tax at 20% adds 23.40, for a grand total of 140.40 — exactly what the calculator shows with its example rows.

Frequently asked questions

Is tax charged before or after a discount?

After. A discount reduces the amount the customer actually pays, so tax is calculated on the discounted figure in almost every tax system.

Can different items have different tax rates?

This tool applies one rate to the whole invoice, which covers most small invoices. For mixed-rate invoices, run each rate group separately and add the totals.

Does the printout count as a legal invoice?

It is a totals summary. A legal invoice usually also needs your business details, a unique invoice number, dates, and your tax registration number — add those from your own template or accounting software.
